Colin Stone ~ piano

Colin Stone

Piano Sonata No 17 in D minor "The Tempest" Beethoven
Wanderer Fantasy Schubert
Kreisleriana Schumann

Amersham Concert Club's 51st season continued last Saturday with a wonderful piano recital by Colin Stone. Colin has had a long and successful career as a solo pianist and member of the London Mozart Trio since winning the Royal Overseas League's Piano Competition in 1986.

His recital in Amersham opened with Beethoven's Sonata No.17 in D minor. The sonata is known as "The Tempest" and is said to be inspired by Shakespeare's play. This was an intense and reflective performance which drew to a lovely, quiet close. This was followed by an impressive and exciting performance of Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasy". Colin produced some dramatic contrasting dynamics in this piece and was warmly applauded at the end of it.

The recital finished with a performance of Schumann's "Kreisleriana". Colin met every challenge of this demanding and popular piece and the audience thoroughly enjoyed his playing. There may have been fireworks outside the hall but we had a very exciting and rewarding evening inside, with many members of the audience placing it amongst their favourite recitals. As an encore, Colin played Brahms Intermezzo Op.117 No.1 which was a fitting end to a lovely evening.

Our season continues in February when Yolanda Prodanova, cello, and Mihai Ritivoiu, piano will be playing music by Brahms and Shostakovitch.
